Master Student Position in Cancer Research at the VetMed and MedUni of Vienna

The Unit of Laboratory Animal Pathology (Prof. Lukas Kenner Lab) at the University of Veterinary Medicine of Vienna is looking for a passionate and highly motivated master student interested in deciphering tumor-suppressive signals in prostate cancer.

The Interleukin-6 (IL-6) signaling cascade is known to play an essential role in tumorigenesis and lately, evidence has accumulated that IL-6 exerts tumor-suppressing functions in prostate cancer, the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in men. Therefore, the main aim of the project is to decipher the role of a specific IL-6 signaling member in vivo and in vitro and to determine if its activation could provide a novel strategy to interfere with prostate carcinogenesis. The work will deal with techniques of molecular biology including cell culture, animal work (mouse as model organism), immunohistochemistry, and RNA/protein analysis.

The master student will be integrated in a highly cooperative, supportive team with friendly working environment. Besides the affiliation with the Veterinary University of Vienna, the master student will also have close collaboration with the Institute of Pathology at the Medical University of Vienna.

We are looking for a motivated master student with a strong interest in molecular biology and who is interested in expanding her/his skills in the field of cancer research. Experience in basic tissue culture techniques and molecular biology would be advantageous. Students with a Bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences (biology, genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology) or a related discipline are welcome to apply. Furthermore, the dedicated master student should be a team player and be able to communicate in English as we are an international research group.

Duration: 9-12 months.

Starting date: can be agreed on.

The master thesis project includes a monthly scholarship of € 438,05 EUR/month (according to the scales of the Austrian Science Fund FWF).

If you are interested to apply in order to become part of our team and to work in an outstanding research environment, you are welcome to submit your application including a CV and a motivation letter to: christina.sternberg(at)vetmeduni.ac.at
