ERA-Net ASTRONET

Objective
ASTRONET was established by a group of European funding organisations in order to create a comprehensive long-term planning framework for the future development of astronomy in Europe.
The network aims to develop a global European vision for astronomy research over the next 15 to 20 years; this vision is to be based on existing strategic plans at the national and regional levels and complemented by analyses of key scientific issues. The task of developing this vision is assigned to the Science Vision Working Group (SVWG), which focuses on four scientific questions:

  1. Do we understand the extremes of the universe?
  2. How do galaxies form and evolve?
  3. How do stars and planets form?
  4. How do we fit in?

Participating countries/organisations
The funding activities coordinated within the framework of ASTRONET are supported by the following ministries and funding agencies in Europe:

  • Austrian Science Fund (FWF)
  • German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
  • Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - Institut National des Sciences de l'Univers (CNRS-INSU, France)
  • Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO)
  • Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (MEC, Spain)
  • Swedish Research Council (VR)
