EUROPOLAR ERA-NET
Duration: 2005-2009
Objective
Based on the activities of the ESF's European Polar Board, EUROPOLAR is dedicated to enhancing the networking and coordination of polar research in Europe.
EUROPOLAR was established in order to determine how to introduce a highly practice-oriented framework for the funding of polar research throughout Europe and how to overcome the existing obstacles in this area. The first step involves an analysis of administrative structures and practical aspects in polar research endeavours. This process is designed to reveal Europe's strengths and weaknesses, to uncover synergies between national research programmes where joint initiatives are feasible, and to identify joint strategic research priorities.
The EUROPOLAR network devotes special attention to establishing closer relations between member organisations from the Russian Federation and the EU. For this purpose, all opportunities for joint efforts are being examined. Furthermore, the consortium will enhance cooperation between countries with large-scale polar research programmes and countries in Central and Southeastern Europe, which are still in the early stages of developing this research area. The sharing of practical knowledge will help those countries accumulate research competence rapidly.
