Trans-European cooperation and coordination of genome sequencing and functional genomics of human-pathogenic microorganisms

Objective
The ERA-NET "Pathogenomics" was launched in October 2004 as a European network designed to coordinate national research activities in the field of genomic research and to create joint funding programmes. In recent years, genomics has revolutionised medical research, especially the study of pathogenic micro-organisms. However, in contrast to human genome research, for which considerable international funding and coordination activities have been undertaken, the funding and organisation of pathogenomics research programmes are still largely fragmented in Europe.
PathoGenoMics was founded in order to improve this situation. It creates a central platform which allows programme managers, government policymakers and other involved parties to design joint activities. The consortium includes representatives from 11 core countries. In addition, the network includes seven associated countries which currently do not carry out funding activities in the field of pathogenomics.
