Participation in international programmes
ICDP
The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) is a multinational programme for the promotion of geo-scientific drilling projects. Geo-scientific deep drilling provides a crucial means of understanding the structure of the earth and its underlying geological processes.
Key scientific issues addressed by ICDP
- Physical and chemical processes in relation to eruptions of volcanoes and earthquakes
- Mechanisms and causes of climate change
- Effects of the impact of meteorites on climate and the biosphere
- Characteristics of the deep biosphere and its relation to geological processes such as the formation of deposits or the development of life
- Development of sedimentary basins and hydrocarbon deposits
- Safe storage of radioactive and toxic substances
- Formation of ore deposits
- Fundamental physics of plate tectonics as well as transport of heat, materials and fluids in the earth's crust
- Fundamentals for improving the interpretation of geophysical data
Participating countries
China, Germany, Finland, Iceland, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Norway, Austria, Poland, South Africa, Czech Republic, USA
