Participation in international programmes
IODP
The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) is an international research programme which aims to analyse the structure and history of the earth by researching the sediments and consolidated rocks in the sea floor as well as observing the conditions in subseafloor environments. IODP considerably enlarges the reach of earlier programmes by making use of multiple drilling platforms.
The program focuses on the following topics:
- The deep biosphere and the subseafloor ocean;
- Environmental change, processes and effects;
- Solid earth cycles and geodynamics.
For further details, please refer to the initial science plan "Earth, Oceans and Life: Scientific Investigations of the Earth System Using Multiple Drilling Platforms and New Technologies".
IODP is governed by the USA and Japan, and Austria participates within the framework of its membership in ECORD (European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling), that is, the European organisation participating in the programme. The scientific planning and coordination of Europe's participation in IODP is handled by ESSAC (ECORD Science Support and Advisory Committee).
This framework offers the following possibilities for Austrian researchers to participate:
- Submission of scientific drilling projects to IODP
- Scientific cooperation in approved drilling expeditions
Submission of applications to ESSAC
- Requests for sample material from previous drilling excursions
Submission of applications to ESSAC
- Participation in workshops
