2012 call

In establishing the New Frontiers Groups programme, the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) intends to develop a flexible structure with which it can respond rapidly to cutting-edge developments in science and research, which are largely driven by young researchers.
The NFG programme aims at investigator-driven innovative research in order to promote promising academic careers and to further strengthen the Academy`s research portfolio.

The OeAW invites applications from highly talented scientists and scholars at early stages of their careers to establish a New Frontiers Group under the auspices of the OeAW (see list of potential OeAW host institutes).

The FWF has been placed in charge of organising peer reviews for this call, which will involve a multi-stage, international review process (see "Principles of the decision-making procedure")

All proposals that meet the formal application guidelines will undergo this process, after which the final funding decision will be taken by the Presiding Committee of the OeAW.

Important information from the FWF
It is possible to submit an essentially identical project for consideration as a New Frontiers Group and as an FWF START project. In cases where a New Frontiers Group is approved, the application process for the corresponding START project will be discontinued.

However, applicants are not permitted to submit different proposals to both the START programme and the NFG programme in the same year. In other words, the same person cannot receive funding approval for a START project as well as an NFG project in the same year.
