The report confirms that the Austrian Science Fund FWF has embarked on a good course with its activities. The recommendations in the report are useful pointers for future developments.
Postdoctoral Funding Schemes in Europe is the result of a survey conducted by the Science Europe (SE) Working Group on Research Careers and maps postdoctoral funding opportunities offered by the SE member organisations, including the FWF. The report is designed to reaffirm that the postdoctoral period is not merely a phase of transition, but an important stepping stone in a scientist’s professional trajectory. Based on the survey, the report presents recommendations for improving support programmes and gives best-practice examples.
Working conditions, gender, flexibility, support & guidance and mobility are the main areas dealt with by the report. The best-practice examples and recommendations mention numerous points that are well covered by the FWF’s approach. They include the implementation of the European Charter for Researchers (in 2015, the FWF was awarded the HR Excellence in Research logo), a focus on gender balance and heightened visibility for women researchers, as well as career-promoting components such as the importance of mentors, reimbursement of training costs, return funding after stays abroad and networking activities. The report also emphasises the significance of programme evaluation.
