Clinical Research (KLIF) call

Remark Two further calls are planned (2011/12 and 2012/13). After these calls, clinical research will be funded in the frame of the programme of stand alone projects, applying specific selection criteria. The call 2011/12 will most likely be opened by December 15th 2011, and will presumably be open until the end of February 2012 (see also http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/aktuelles.asp). In autumn 2011, special coaching workshops for clinical researcher will be offered.
Target group All clinical scientists working in Austria who possess the relevant qualifications, sufficient working capacity and the infrastructure necessary to carry out the project submitted.
Goals Funding will be available for projects in the field of non-commercial clinical research which are thoroughly described in terms of objectives and methods. Research efforts must be initiated by academic researchers. Business organisations must not have a direct commercial interest in the results. Projects must involve human patients or healthy subjects and aim to generate new scientific knowledge and insights that improve clinical practice and patient treatment.
Requirements Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they have conducted suitable preparatory work related to the proposed studies. Project proposals must involve human patients or healthy subjects, qualify as top-notch clinical research by international standards, and undergo a relevant international peer review.
For the decision of a project, approval from the responsible ethics committee is required latest by September 1st
Length Maximum 36 months; projects may be extended to 60 months provided that no additional costs are incurred.
Grant Amounts A total of EUR 3 million is available per call; no specific grant amounts or limits are prescribed.
However, given the relatively small budget available, large-scale and especially costly clinical studies cannot be financed.
In addition, studies where business organizations have a direct commercial interest in the results as well as purely exploratory studies ("fishing expeditions") are not eligible for funding.
Applications Applications are to be submitted in response to the call announced by Mid December 2011.
Application deadline: presumably by the end of February 2012
Allocation The FWF Board will make funding decisions in October 2012 on the basis of an international peer review and the recommendations of an international expert jury.
