Application-oriented Basic Research

Translational Research Program

The Translational Research Programme is part of the BRIDGE Initiative, commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT). The BRIDGE Initiative includes two programmes - the Bridge Programme (FFG) and the Translational Research Programme (FWF), which differ from each other in how close the research is to application.

Target group Scientists of any discipline working in Austria
Goals The Programme should provide scientists with the impetus to consider their research results from the point of view of concrete applications or other potential benefits and should provide first-rate researchers with the opportunity to develop their work further in the direction of concrete applications or of an economic, societal or cultural application. The application could be realized, for example, by means of patents or through a successful partnership with the economy, medicine, politics, arts, administration or other interested parties within Austria or abroad. In such cases, however, further financial support will be the responsibility of the appropriate partner or of other funding bodies.

The Translational Research Programme aims to realize the following individual goals:

  • strengthening of extended or "oriented" basic research at the interface to applied research

  • development of human resources in the sciences, according to the principle of "training through research"

  • intensification of national cooperations as well as intensification of international networks
  • Requirements
high scientific quality at an international level
innovative potential of the expected application
no commercial financial partner already involved
    Length maximum 36 months
    Eligibility researchers working in Austria
    Funding Level
variable, depending on the individual project
the average level of project funding is around EUR 90.000 per year
    Applications
start of call 21 June 2010
Submission deadline 2 September 2010 (date of postmark):

    in English
    Allocation
Final decisions on funding are taken by the BMVIT on the basis of recommendations from the FWF
Board, which are in turn based on the results of an international peer-review procedure and the recommendations of the BRIDGE Advisory Board
It is anticipated that funding will be allocated at the mid of April 2011
    VISITING SCIENTIST PROGRAMME "TRANSLATIONAL BRAINPOWER"

The aim of "Translational Brainpower" is the close involvement of internationally recognized researchers from other countries of any scientific discipline in scientific projects at the interface between extended and "oriented" basic research and applied research in Austria. The initiative for the joint project can also proceed from the international research partner; but the "Translational Brainpower" application must be submitted by the Austrian project partner within the "Translational Research-Programme" and has to be embodied at an Austrian research institution.

In placing an application for a Translational Brainpower project, attention should be paid to the "Additional guidelines for applications for Translational Brainpower projects".
