Goals Scientists should be guaranteed the greatest possible freedom and flexibility in the performance of their research.

international recognition in the field
employment in an Austrian research organization
aged 55 or under at the time of nomination (=deadline for nominations)
Length 5 years
Level up to EUR 1.5 Mio. per award
Nominations
may only come from people entitled to make such proposals
self-nominations are not permitted
deadline for nominations: 6 November 2009 (date of postmark)
Allocation
decisions taken by the international START/Wittgenstein Jury based on an international review process
June 2010
awarded by the Federal Minister for Science
Number 1 or 2 Awards per year
