At IST Austria we support the self-archiving of scientific work and encourage publishing in Open Access journals, in order to make the results of our research accessible to the broadest possible audience. In computer science, there is a strong tradition of disseminating papers and software through personal homepages, and institutional as well as public archives. This has significantly simplified scientific communication and accelerated scientific impact. On the other hand, peer review is an important part of science. At the same time, the rapidly rising costs of commercial publishing have given urgency to scientist-driven initiatives to disrupt the current business model for journals, generally towards more Open Access. I strongly support these initiatives.
