We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student (f/m/d) to join the research group of Birgit Strobl at the Centre of Biological Sciences. The main goal of the PhD project is to investigate how type I interferons (IFN-I) sustain tissue homeostasis and shape immune responses to infection. Using engineered mouse models, candidates will compare IFN-α and IFN-β across immune and non-immune compartments, with a focus on key tissues. We will deploy advanced, multi-modal profiling to define when and where IFN-I is produced, how cells sense these signals, and how this impacts disease. Core technologies include single-cell RNA sequencing, ChIP-seq, multicolour flow cytometry, imaging, and complementary infection and functional assays. This work will generate an integrated view of IFN-α versus IFN-β function and address a major gap in interferon biology, with implications for modulating IFN-I pathways in infectious and inflammatory diseases.

The laboratory is embedded in the Department of Biological Sciences and Pathobiology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. The research groups within the department examine a wide range of topics, including infection, immunity and cancer.
