PhD Position in Molecular Biology / Biotechnology (BOKU University, Tulln, Austria)

A PhD position is available at the BOKU University, Department of Agricultural Sciences, Institute of Microbial Genetics (IMiG), Campus Tulln. The position is offered within the Group AG Atanasova.

The project investigates novel biological roles of Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenases (LPMOs, AA9 family) in the mycoparasitic and plant-associated fungus Clonostachys rosea. These enzymes are unusually expanded in C. rosea compared to related fungi, suggesting diversified and potentially new functions beyond polysaccharide degradation. The work will explore their possible involvement in plant colonization, effector-like or pathogenic interactions, and direct antagonism against other fungi.

The main objectives are to characterize the catalytic and biological functions of selected C. rosea LPMOs, to study their roles in fungal–plant and fungal–fungal interactions, and to elucidate mechanisms underlying enzymatic diversity and antagonistic function.

The project combines molecular genetics, microbiology, and biochemical methods. Experimental work will include establishment and application of CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing in C. rosea, protein expression profiling during plant or fungal interactions, heterologous expression and enzymatic activity assays, phenotypic and molecular characterization of mutant strains, as well as integration of computational modeling and in vitro assays to study enzymatic and biological functions.

We are looking for a highly motivated and curious candidate holding a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or a related field. The candidate should have a strong interest in fungal biology, plant–microbe interactions, and enzyme function, as well as hands-on experience with molecular and microbiological techniques such as cloning, PCR, or transformation. Excellent English communication skills, a proactive attitude, and an analytical and independent working style are expected.

We offer a three-year PhD position funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). The project provides access to modern molecular and microbiology laboratories and supportive supervision in an international and interdisciplinary environment. The lab offers a dynamic and collegial atmosphere at BOKU University and eligibility for the Pendlerpauschale for commuting to the Tulln campus. The gross monthly salary (paid 14 times per year) follows the FWF PhD salary scheme.

Applications should include a single PDF file containing a letter of motivation (including a short description of technical skills), a CV, academic transcripts, and contact details of at least two referees. Please send your application by email to Dr. Lea Atanasova (lea.atanasova(at)boku.ac.at).
