Ph.D. positions to systematically study protein-protein interaction changes in cancer

The “Network Pharmacology” research group headed by Ulrich STELZL at the University of Graz, Austria is seeking outstanding candidates for

two Ph.D. positions

each funded for 3 years by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).


The group is focusing on the analysis of molecular interaction networks with the aim to understand the dynamics of molecular networks underlying cellular processes related to human disease. Experimental functional genomics techniques, e.g. HTP Y2H screening, mass spectrometry and next gen sequencing, are utilized in combination with biochemical, cell biological and computational methods.

Complex diseases strongly depend on the individual genomic background and cannot be treated effectively by interventions at single drug targets and with single drugs. Network biology will advance our understanding of the molecular changes in complex diseases and of drug action and will be an important piece in developing individualized medicine.


Applicants should hold a degree in a relevant life science subject, including e.g. molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacy or biotechnology with practical experience in these fields. Applicants that hold a degree in computational biology or bioinformatics and are interested in applying their computational background to data driven genomics and network biology research are also very welcome to apply. Candidates are expected to be highly motivated and reliable, and to be willing to develop their conceptual and writing skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as well as willingness to work in a team.


The successful candidates will join a newly equipped, active interdisciplinary research environment at the interface between basic and applied research. Ph.D. students are enrolled through the University of Graz and will be active members of the Doctoral Academy Graz (doctoral-academy.uni-graz.at/en/the-academy/). Remuneration is according to current personnel costs schema of the FWF.
