The role of pfpI proteases in Listeria monocytogenes
Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular foodborne pathogen responsible for listeriosis, a rare but severe illness in humans. L. monocytogenes can resist extreme environmental stress and survives therefore in multiple habitants e.g. in the host or the food producing environment. We could recently identify a new stress survival islet (SSI2) comprising a PfpI protease, in L. monocytogenes, which is responsible for alkaline and oxidative stress tolerance. The focus of this FWF-funded PhD thesis will be the functional characterization of this PfpI protease.
We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated student. The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:
• Master's degree in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline.
• Prior experience in microbiological methods, cloning, protein purification and/or cell culture will be advantageous.
• The applicant should have a keen interest in science, and be highly motivated.
• Willing to learn new techniques.
• Able to work independently as well as in a team.
• Good written and oral communication skills, good computer skills.
The work will be carried out at the Institute for Milk Hygiene, Veterinary University of Vienna in the research group of Kathrin Rychli. Funding will be for three years according to the salary scheme of the Austrian Science Fund.
