Ausschreibungstext

The Section of Medical Statistics at the Medical University of Vienna invites applications for a funded 3-year PhD-position in the PhD-program “Medical Informatics, Biostatistics and Complex Systems”. We seek a junior researcher with a strong background in statistics, mathematics, data sciences or related fields who would like to gain research experience as part of an innovative research group in medical statistics as well as in an interdisciplinary project team of clinicians, epidemiologists and outcomes researchers.

As a PhD student, you will develop statistical models for the analysis of large observational data sets with longitudinal measurements, based on methods from causal inference and survival analysis with competing risks and time dependent covariates. You will perform statistical programming to implement the models in statistical software. The PhD position is embedded in the interdisciplinary research project “Sex Differences in Chronic Kidney Disease Identification and Treatment” funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF led by Manfred Hecking from the Division of Nephrology and Dialysis. The developed statistical methods will be applied in the analysis of a large data set aiming to understand the effect of gender as well as physiological and socio-economic factors on the disease development and on therapy decisions in chronic kidney disease patients.

The PhD salary will be according to the guideline of the Austrian science fund, see www.fwf.ac.at/de/forschungsfoerderung/personalkostensaetze.

The expected starting date for the position is March 2019.

The PhD position requires

• Strong background in statistics, mathematics, data sciences or a related field,

• Interest to develop innovative statistical methods,

• Very good programming skills, e.g., in statistical software such as R or SAS,

• Sound oral and written communication skills in English (knowledge of German is not required),

• Willingness to collaborate across scientific and geographic borders.

To qualify as a PhD student you should fulfill the admission criteria of the PhD program at the Medical University of Vienna. A master in statistics, mathematics, data sciences or a related science is required. For detailed information on the PhD program see
