The group of Prof. Backus at the Institute of Physical Chemistry studies structure and dynamics of molecular processes with a current focus on interfaces. We apply static and time-resolved vibrational spectroscopic methods. To strengthen our team we are looking for a PhD student.


Duration of employment: 4 year/s

Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.


Job Description:

The position is dedicated to study the mechanism of photocatalytic water splitting at the interface between a catalyst and water. As such, active contribution to research is expected. Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement and supervision of students. We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months.



Master degree in engineering, in chemistry or physics and experience with spectroscopy. Excellent command of written and spoken English. Ability to work in a team.


Experience with vibrational spectroscopy and/or experience with constructing setups with pulsed lasers is expected.
