DOCTORAL THESES – 4 positions open, "Multiscale changes in bone due to bio-resorbable implants"

Physics, (bio)materials science, medicine
3 positions in Austria (Wien, Graz), 1 position in Switzerland

Project: "Multiscale changes in bone due to bio-resorbable implants: towards a prediction of structure and mechanical performance"

The FWF (Austrian Science Fund) and the SNF (Swiss National Science Foundation) have decided to fund an Austro-Swiss research consortium:

• University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria

• Medical University of Graz (MUG), Graz, Austria

• Technical University of Vienna (TUW), Vienna Austria

• Paul-Scherrer Institute (PSI), Villigen, Switzerland

Therefore, we seek to fill 4 open positions for doctoral students. Candidates should have a strong background in engineering mechanics, biophysics, materials science, biology, medicine and/or applied mathematics. Scientific enthusiasm and interdisciplinary competences are also expected.

Bio-resorbable materials are considered the implant materials of the future, since they degrade in the body with time and are replaced by healthy tissue. For bone, magnesium based alloys have proven particularly successful. In this project, the bone reaction to bio-resorbable magnesium implants will be studied and the role of mechanical stimuli will be explored. The topic is of great scientific and medical relevance. You will get the unique possibility to gain experience in 4 different labs including one of Europe’s best large scale synchrotron facilities (Swiss Light Source) at PSI.

Doctoral thesis projects:

1) Structural investigations of bone by x-ray scattering and mechanical testing in the lab and at the synchrotron (BOKU), within the Doctoral School “Biomaterials and Biointerfaces”

2) Implantology; histological and macroscopic characterization of rat bones (MUG)

3) Multiscale mechanical modelling based on structural data obtained in 1) and 4) (TUW)

4) Application and development of cutting edge tomographic methods with synchrotron radiation to characterize bone in 3D (PSI)
