We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join the Lab of Prof. Christoph Steininger at the Anna Spiegel Center of Translational Research (Medical University of Vienna)


We are interested in virus-host interactions during Human Cytomegalovirus infection in the context of a novel inhibitor of Protein Phosphatase 1 (PP1), a potential target for broad spectrum antiviral inhibition. By using state-of-the-art technologies (TMT phospho-proteomics and interactomics) you will have the opportunity to investigate the molecular mechanisms and signaling cascade perturbations of PP1 inhibition during a viral infection.




- M.Sc. or equivalent degree in molecular/cellular biology, pharmacy, biotechnology or a related field

- High accuracy in scientific work and a proactive approach to solving problems

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

- High self-motivation and desire to work in an international research environment

- Readiness to tutor diploma students

- Research experience with qPCR, Western Blot, cell culture, virus culture is a plus

- Research experience with Mass Spectrometry and bioinformatics skills are a plus




- Employment at the Medical University of Vienna for 3 years

- Enrollment in the “Immunology” PhD program

- Gross salary of approx. 30.870 EUR per year, according to the funding agency (Austrian Science Fund ‘FWF’; https://www.fwf.ac.at/en/research-funding/personnel-costs/)

- Modern bench space and laboratory facilities with state-of-the-art equipment
