Master thesis “Analysis of the heat transfer between refrigerants and latent storage materials in a novel heat pump storage application”



- Two-phase flow, condensation and evaporation effects of different refrigerants were investigated in detail in the past, whereas the understanding of the interplay of the refrigerant together with adjoining latent materials (e.g. PCMs) in integrated storages in heat pumps are a current topic of research interest. To gain a deeper understanding of the heat transfer between the refrigerant in different phases (liquid, two-phase and gaseous) and a latent material (PCM) integrated in different designs of a heat exchanger/storage, the system should be modelled in detail with CFD for different boundary conditions (e.g. geometries, temperatures, pressures, etc.)

- With the aid of an experimental test rig, the different simulated designs will also be characterized experimentally. This allows to compare simulations to experiments and will discuss the heat transfer mechanisms for the different boundary conditions.



- You will conduct literature research in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), two-phase flow and heat transfer and you will build up your knowledge in this specific area.

- You will model and simulate different heat exchanger/storage designs with CFD.

- You will carry out experimental tests of the different simulated heat exchanger/storage designs with the aid of an experimental test rig.

- You will analyze the results and compare them with the detailed CFD models and simplified models.



- You will gain experience in the area of CFD, thermodynamics, heat transfer and experimental research.

- You will train scientific working and have the opportunity to discuss experiences with scientific experts.


Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:

- Ongoing Master's studies in the field of applied science (e.g. mechanical or mechatronics engineering, technical physics or similar)

- Good knowledge in CFD, data analysis, programming and thermodynamics.

- Interested in the conception of scientific studies

- Self-motivated and problem-solving mindset.

- Good knowledge of English and/or German in word and writing


What to expect:

EUR 779,25,- gross per month for 20 hours/week based on the collective agreement. There will be additional company benefits. You will be part of our international Young AIT network.
