1 PhD student/full time or a post-Doc/half time

natural or life sciences (interests in haemostasis and thrombosis)
Medical University Vienna (“Anna Spiegel” building)

Thrombosis is a hallmark of life-threatening diseases, such as myocardial infarction, stroke or venous thromboembolism, representing major causes of death in the Western civilization. In 2014 a new Special Research Program was launched at the Medical University of Vienna, financed by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), which comprises a network of eight research groups focusing on molecular and cellular links between inflammation and thrombotic diseases to provide a new view of thrombosis, integrating the role of inflammatory processes, thereby building up new strategies for therapeutic interventions. We are a highly active group with a focus on clinical and translational aspects of thrombosis.

One PhD student/full time (30 hours/week) or a Post-Doc/half time (20 hours/week) position for 3 years is available from March 2021 in the team “P05: Ingrid Pabinger and Cihan Ay” (https://inthro.meduniwien.ac.at/en/projects/).

Thromboses of the venous or the arterial system are a serious health problem nowadays. Certain diseases are known to increase the risk for venous and arterial thromboses considerably. The focus of this PhD thesis will be to investigate underlying mechanisms for development of thrombosis. Knowledge on or experience in biomarkers of the aging process would be highly appreciated.

Applicants must hold (or be close to obtaining) an undergraduate degree equivalent to a Master in any discipline of natural or life sciences. Interests in haemostasis and thrombosis, experience with basic research and statistical techniques are highly desirable. The candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills (English), and the ability to work independently as well as in collaborative research efforts. Our consortium has extensive contacts worldwide, which will be made available to the candidates to gain international experience during their projects.

PhD students will be enrolled in the PhD program of the Medical University of Vienna. The candidate will receive a monthly salary according to the scales of the Medical University of Vienna (estimated gross salary per month: PhD EUR 2228.63 for 30h per week; Post-Doc EUR 1972.95 for 20h per week).

The group is located at the Medical University Vienna, in the new “Anna Spiegel” building (http://www.meduniwien.ac.at/annaspiegel), providing the entire infrastructure required for professional biomedical research, including core facilities for imaging, flow cytometry, genomics and proteomics.
