Bioinformatician in Development and Disease

Life Sciences
IMP - Research Institute of Molecular Pathology

The ERC-funded Pauli and Obenauf Groups at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna, Austria, are jointly recruiting a highly motivated bioinformatician with interest in biology. He/she will work on research projects that focus on elucidating molecular mechanisms in development and cancer biology.

The successful candidate will contribute to experimental design and perform method development and integrative data analysis on large (epi)genomic datasets produced by a wide range of next-generation sequencing technologies (e.g., genome, transcriptome, epigenome, ribosome profiling, and single-cell sequencing). The candidate will be an integral member of a dynamic and ambitious group of biologists to support cutting-edge basic and biomedical research.

Your tasks:

* Data processing and analysis: Interpret, integrate, and maintain multi-OMICS datasets, including comprehensive sequencing datasets generated by our teams with support from our NGS facility https://www.viennabiocenter.org/vbcf/next-generation-sequencing/ and be in charge of data mining from publicly available datasets.

* Software and technology development: Implement cutting-edge software and analysis pipelines for data analysis to formulate hypotheses which will then be tested in our experimental systems.

* Become an integral member of our teams with deep intellectual project involvement and close interactions with wet lab scientists: Lead bioinformatic analyses, provide support, teach scientists in the team how to analyze their data, contribute to paper writing.

Your profile:

* Training in bioinformatics, computer science, genome biology, physics, or another quantitative field (Master and/or PhD)

* Strong programming skills (Proficiency in either R or Python is a must) and experience working with large volumes of data

* Proficiency in Unix/Linux and experience with shared compute resources (HPC, job queuing systems)

* Prior experience with next-generation sequencing data and high-throughput bioinformatics is a plus

* High accuracy and reliability in the processing of large-scale data, solid understanding of quantitative methods

* Collaborative mindset and motivation to work in an international, interdisciplinary environment

* Prior experience in the implementation of analytical pipelines (Nextflow, Snakemake) is desirable

* Team player with strong communication skills and a proactive “getting things done” mentality

* Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (German language skills are not required)

Our offer:

The successful candidate will be part of a stimulating research environment at the Vienna Biocenter Campus and be embedded in a group of experienced computational biologists/bioinformaticians with complementary expertise affiliated with different research groups at the IMP, ensuring constant interactions, support, and training. The IMP is committed to foster the career of all bioinformaticians and has implemented a career structure and support. The salary is commensurate with qualifications/experience and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

Applications, including a letter of motivation describing your particular interest in this position and past research experiences, a CV, GitHub account if available, and the names and contact details of referees should be submitted ONLINE: https://imba.jobbase.io/apply/c2fllz6llo5eti5lef0hm6t8sa8yt7f.
