Abstract:

The ‘Global South’ is on the rise – at least according to the increasing use of the term. Scholars who would have once stated that they do research on ‘developing countries’ or the ‘Third World’ now frame their work by referring to the ‘Global South’. The use of ‘South’ terminology has also seen a remarkable expansion in bilateral and multilateral policy spaces where ‘South-South’ cooperation is now part of everyday rhetoric.

This lecture examines current realities evolving around the notion of the ‘Global South.’ Drawing on an ongoing collaborative project, I discuss preliminary insights from fields such as urban studies, international development and China’s connectivity politics. Building on work by the spatial theorist Edward Soja, I then present a first analytical step towards making sense of the evolving meanings of the ‘Global South’.
