The mammalian immune system acts as a complex surveillance system ensuring to distinguish between self and non-self, and between harmless and dangerous events approaching from outside or inside of the organism. Moreover, the immune system affects growth, differentiation, and death of cells and tissues, and thus critically contributes to the maintenance of tissue homeostasis and the integrity of the entire organism. The doctoral college “Immunity in Cancer and Allergy - ICA” focuses on two pathologies of the immune system, i.e. the overwhelming allergic immune response and the inefficient immune response against certain tumours. Unravelling cellular and molecular immunological mechanisms and pathways will enable the development of rational drug treatments of these diseases.
ICA is an international PhD program of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Paris-Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS), intending to attract and select excellent graduate students from all over the world, and to provide an intellectually stimulating environment. With excellent instrumental and methodological infrastructure and ambitious scientific projects, ICA prepares its students for a successful career in basic as well as translational and applied science.
Allergy and cancer are major topics of the University of Salzburg and the University Hospital of Salzburg, which have invested substantially and are committed to further support the involved research groups with infrastructure and personnel.

With respect to the structured education of doctoral students within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, ICA already gave a strong input and is acting as a role model. Numerous activities have been organized, such as the international ICA-symposia every term, specific scientific theoretical and practical courses and seminars with invited scientists, training courses dealing with soft skills and career options, stays in partner laboratories, and participations of ICA students in international meetings and congresses. In addition, members of ICA have been highly successful in raising external national and international funding.

Since its start in 2008, the doctoral college ICA has already strongly influenced the teaching landscape of the biological sciences at the University of Salzburg, and moreover, has had a positive impact on the scientific quality and visibility of the involved groups, and the University of Salzburg.
