The Austrian Science Fund FWF is among the supporters of the international Initiative for Open Abstracts (I4OA). A broad alliance of publishers, research organisations, and other interested parties such as Wikimedia or Wellcome Trust has committed itself to promoting the unrestricted availability of abstracts of scholarly publications, particularly journal articles and book chapters.
Together with more than 50 partners worldwide, the FWF supports, as part of its Open Science Strategy, the Initiative for Open Abstracts (I4OA). I4OA was founded to promote the unrestricted availability of abstracts of scholarly publications, particularly of journal articles and book chapters. More and more scholarly publishers are now adopting the principles of I4OA and sending the metadata of publications to the Crossref non-profit platform.
The principles of I4OA contribute to making publications easier to find and cite. They encourage indexation, expand and simplify the use of text mining techniques, and facilitate the research work of researchers of all disciplines who do not have access to commercial bibliographic services. This should thus boost the transparency, reproducibility, and openness of science and enable smooth communication within the scientific community.
