Austrian Consortium Joins OAPEN
Publishing Date:
OAPEN Foundation and an Austrian consortium, consisting of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the University of Vienna and the publishers Böhlau and Holzhausen have agreed to make OAPEN’s deposit service for OA books available to all Austria-based researchers.
The OAPEN deposit service is funded by the Austrian consortium and will be free for all researchers working mainly in Austria. Researchers can submit their peer reviewed open access books to the OAPEN library through a website maintained by FWF: http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/service/oapen-library. Researchers need to complete a form and provide a PDF of their publication. Publishers can also deposit these OA books directly on behalf of their authors.
The OAPEN Library is a central, European repository set up specifically for OA monographs and edited collections. OAPEN collects, hosts, and provides access to these books and book chapters, in order to maximise dissemination and scientific and societal impact.
Eelco Ferwerda, director of OAPEN Foundation, said: “We are very pleased to work with the Austrian consortium, to extend our deposit service for open access monographs to all Austrian researchers. FWF has been a forerunner in the transition to OA books and this partnership will further increase the global dissemination and use of Austrian research output.”
Alan Scott, FWF Vice-President for the humanities and social sciences, added: “Research monographs remain the ‘gold standard’ in many humanities and in some social-science disciplines. It is thus all the more important in the digital age to facilitate their broad dissemination. But beyond that, internet publication opens up new opportunities, for example, enriching text with audio-visual media or linking it to digital museum and archival material.”
Heinz Faßmann, Vice-Rector for Research and International Affairs, University of Vienna, said: “There has been great progress when it comes to ensuring open access of journal articles in the last decade. We are convinced that the same ideal will prevail with scholarly monographs, which is why OAPEN is an excellent initiative to advance this development efficiently and sustainably. OAPEN’s collection of peer-reviewed open access books offers the perfect entry point to academic debate for scholars and the interested public alike.”
About OAPEN
OAPEN Foundation promotes and supports open access for academic books. The OAPEN Library (www.oapen.org) was launched in 2010 as a platform for full text hosting, deposit, dissemination and preservation of OA books. The Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB - www.doabooks.org), winner of the IFLA/Brill Open Access Award 2015, was established as a separate activity in 2012, in order to improve the discovery of OA books, and to establish a quality-controlled list of academic OA book publishers.
OAPEN reaches the majority of open access book publishers through its two platforms, and provides its deposit service to research funders with OA mandates for monographs. Partners include the Wellcome Trust, the Austrian Science Fund, the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, and the European Research Council.
