The newly filled position of Executive Vice-President constitutes the final point in the appointment of the new FWF Executive Board. The Vice-President will take up her office in the beginning of September.

In all 68 applications were received for the new position of Executive Vice-President of the Austrian Science Fund FWF. After a selection phase carried out by Deloitte, an external consultant agency, five candidates were invited to a hearing of the FWF Supervisory Board, who finally nominated Artemis Vakianis as the new Executive Vice-President on 4 July 2016.

“On behalf of the Supervisory Board I congratulate Artemis Vakianis most warmly on her appointment as the new Executive Vice-President,” said Hans Sünkel, Chairman of the Supervisory Board and continued, “Together with the Scientific Executive Board we intend to master the problems and challenges awaiting us and stabilize the financial growth of FWF. I wish Ms. Vakianis – and of course the entire Executive Board – success in this endeavour and all others.”

“I thank the Supervisory Board for the trust placed in my person,” was the new Executive Vice-President Artemis Vakianis’ initial reaction. “I look forward to the exciting tasks awaiting me at the Austrian Science Fund. Together with the Scientific Executive Board I am confident we will be able to fulfil the high expectations of our scientific community.”

The Austrian Science Fund FWF is Austria's central funding organization for basic research. It supports research projects focused on acquiring, extending and intensifying scientific knowledge. The new appointment has completed the FWF Executive Board, which was initially constituted in accordance with the Research and Technology Promotion Law (Forschungs- und Technologieförderungsgesetz; FTFG). Klement Tockner was appointed the new President of FWF in May. Scientific Vice-Presidents are Gerlinde Mautner (Humanities and Social Sciences), Ellen Zechner (Biology and Medical Science) and Gregor Weihs (Natural and Technical Sciences). The five-member FWF Executive Board will take office in the beginning of September 2016.

Executive Vice-President Artemis Vakianis

The position of Executive Vice-President was created by the amendment of the FTFG in October 2015. It replaced the executive director who had been in this position until the time and defined the commercial and administrative tasks of the Executive Vice-President. The legally specified term of office is four years; reappointments are possible.

Artemis Vakianis (42) studied economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business from 1994 to 2000. She then completed a postgraduate course in culture management at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. From 2000 onward she implemented a controlling system at Theater in der Josefstadt (Vienna) on a freelance basis. From 2002 onward she was in charge of commercial affairs at the said theatre. In 2005 she became Deputy Managing Director at Komische Oper (Comic Opera) in Berlin. Her last position prior to her self-employment was from 2010 to 2014. During this time she served as Managing Director of Steirischer Herbst (Styrian Autumn Festival) and accompanied its expansion beyond the city of Graz into various regions of the state of Styria.

In 2014 Vakianis founded her own agency and has been advising cultural organizations in commercial matters. She developed mobile applications for enhancing production.

Artemis Vakianis has been teaching culture management for several years at the Institute of Culture Management of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and the Polytechnic College in Kufstein.
