On Friday, 25 May 2018, the Governor of South Tyrol (Alto Adige), Arno Kompatscher, and FWF President Klement Tockner met in Bolzano to sign a partnership agreement for cooperation in scientific research funding. The agreement creates the legal basis for joint research proposals from South Tyrolean and Austrian project partners. For these “joint research projects”, a division of tasks has been devised for application between FWF and South Tyrol. Relying on its tried and tested procedures, the FWF assumes sole responsibility for scientific evaluation, while the administrative and financial aspects of the projects are handled either by the Province of South Tyrol or the FWF. The partnership initiative is to be launched in the autumn of this year. FWF President Klement Tockner considers this agreement to be a further step forward in fulfilling the strategy of the Austrian Science Fund designed to foster scientific synergies between Austria and neighbouring regions. “Science and cutting-edge research cross national boundaries. Researchers are highly mobile, research activities are increasingly coordinated at European level, and the proportion of joint international publications is on the rise,” comments the FWF President upon the conclusion of the agreement. In an initial reaction, Governor Kompatscher also emphasises the importance of international cooperation. “As a small research location, South Tyrol needs to network with larger locations in order to give its researchers and institutions access to new funding opportunities and the best partners,” the Governor observed.
