The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) is one of the Austrian partners participating in an EU-funded twinning project with Georgia. The goal is to strengthen the exchange of knowledge and collaboration in the fields of science and research in Georgia.

The EU Commission has initiated a two-year twinning project with Georgia called “Supporting Inter-Sectoral Collaboration Possibilities Between Research and Industry”. The Georgian partner is "Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia" (SRNSFG). The two-year project will be carried out under the leadership of the Environment Agency Austria, together with Joanneum Research, the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), as well as the Project Management Agency of the German Aerospace Center (DLR, Germany), and Daugavpils University (Latvia). The European Commission has allocated €1.3 million for the implementation of the project, in which Austrian, German, and Latvian experts will work together. The aim of the project is to promote the exchange of expertise and experience regarding research funding, to support the National Science Foundation of Georgia (SRNSFG) in the area of organisational development, and to enhance inter-sectoral and international cooperation in research funding.

"Twinning" is a European Union instrument for institutional cooperation between public administrations of EU Member States and beneficiary or partner countries. Since 2004, twinning has also been available to some EU Eastern and Southern Neighbourhood partner countries.
