The digital transformation continues to advance. Algorithms determine our lives—with far-reaching cultural and economic consequences. A knowledge of programming is no longer enough to shape this rapid change; social issues must also be addressed. This is why the FWF, together with the international partners of the “CHANSE – Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences” network, is promoting research into the digital transformation from the perspective of the humanities and social sciences. International teams can now submit project proposals.
CHANSE “Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe” is a joint initiative of 27 research funding organisations from 24 countries, including the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). The goal is to enable international projects on the topic of “Transformations: Social and Cultural Dynamics in the Digital Age” and to provide researchers, especially from the humanities and social sciences, with the necessary funding to research the digital transformation in all its forms. Furthermore, it aims to inspire collaboration between researchers and stakeholders from other areas of society (NGOs, public administration, business, etc.). In addition to the €26 million in funds provided by the national funding organisations, the programme has received €10 million in co-funding from the European Union from the “Horizon 2020” research and innovation programme.
Digital transformation: Focus on Europe
CHANSE supports innovative projects into the workings, meanings, and consequences of transformations and innovations in the present digital age, viewed through the lens of the social and cultural dynamics. The projects should demonstrate a strong European dimension and investigate changes affecting Europe as a whole or individual regions.
Accepting proposals now
The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) invites teams of researchers from the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences to submit promising project proposals. The aim is to encourage new cross-border collaborations.
