Through its alpha+ Foundation, the FWF offers charitably minded people and organisations the opportunity to provide researchers with financial support. One of the foundation’s funding options is the Rückenwind funding bonus, which is available to internationally active researchers in the Erwin Schrödinger Programme. Six researchers have received funding recently as part of the second round of awards.
Philanthropy in science and research is growing. Numerous initiatives from the Austrian education, science, and research sector are also working to provide researchers with more non-profit funds from private individuals and organisations. The alpha+ Foundation of the FWF is attempting to promote this cultural change on the nationwide level, too.
A first successful result of these efforts is the annual disbursement of the Rückenwind funding bonus, which is intended to increase the long-term impact of research stays abroad. Through this funding scheme, the alpha+ Foundation aims to further encourage international networking in basic research through private support. Up to €5,000 per researcher is available, in addition to their Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship. Six researchers from the health sciences have now received funding as part of the second round of awards.
In 2021, the following six researchers have received a Rückenwind funding bonus:
- Alexander Leithner
Erwin Schrödinger research project: “DC biophysical parameters regulate immunity and tolerance”
- Marie-Therese Fischer
Erwin Schrödinger research project: “Dietary tuning of infant social interactions”
- Andreas Konrad
Erwin Schrödinger research project: “Targeted muscle stretching to improve running economy”
- Markus Waldeck-Weiermair
Erwin Schrödinger research project: “To live and to die with reactive oxygen species”
- Miriam Michel
Erwin Schrödinger research project: “Maternal hyperoxygenation in the fetus with heart disease”
- Lisa Landskron
Erwin Schrödinger research project: “The regulatory machinery of tubulin detyrosination”
