Research in a more open, transparent, and collective manner—the Austrian Science Fund FWF has revised its open access guidelines to be aligned with the principles of the international Plan S initiative starting in 2021. Research results will in future be openly available to everyone free of charge.

The Austrian Science Fund FWF, the Austrian Library Consortium (Kooperation E-Medien Österreich, KEMÖ) and Springer Nature have renewed their existing open access contract for Springer journals. The transformative agreement enables researchers and students in Austria to publish peer-reviewed research articles open access in more than 1,900 Springer journals without additional fees.

The "Plan S" initiative will enter into force in 2021 and provide free access to scholarly publications. Following an intensive consultation process, the revised principles and guidelines have now been published. Together with a number of internationally renowned funding organisations, the FWF supports the initiative and is well-prepared for its implementation.

Under a landmark Open Access Publishing Framework Agreement signed in Vienna on December 20th, 2017 between the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the University of Vienna and the publisher Frontiers, Austrian researchers affiliated to or supported through these institutions may from January 1st, 2018 publish their articles in Frontiers’ open-access journals through a simplified process that covers article processing charges.

Open access to qualified research data is a precondition for the reproducibility, verification and falsification of data for further scientific and practical purposes.
