What is not funded?

The following publications cannot be funded as part of the Stand-Alone Publications Programme: journals; annuals; books honouring a specific person, organisation or event; conference and congress proceedings without a specific focus; new editions (reprints, anthologies with articles that have already been published); textbooks; bibliographies; exhibition catalogues; catalogues on collections; picture books; facsimile editions; works of exclusively local interest (e.g., chronicles of municipalities or towns/cities); and qualification papers below the dissertation level.

Applications will be returned without review if the work has already been published or is in production (typesetting or printing).

Does the FWF provide funding for editing done before submitting the manuscript to the FWF?

The FWF provides funding retroactively for editing done before submitting the manuscript to the FWF under the following conditions:

  • the reviewers agree that no additional editing is required.
  • the publisher or the applicant must provide the FWF with a record of the changes made so the reviewers can verify that the editing work has been done. In other words, the FWF must be able to see that the manuscript has been edited before being submitted. The name of the editor must be included.

Is funding available for doctoral dissertations and post-doctoral venia dissertations (Habilitationen) written in Austria?

The FWF provides funding for post-doctoral venia dissertations (Habilitationen) and revised doctoral dissertations by applicants eligible for FWF funding. The FWF provides funding for post-doctoral venia dissertations (Habilitationen) and revised doctoral dissertations by applicants not eligible for FWF funding for up to three years after completion of the work in question if it has been prepared and accepted under the auspices of an Austrian research institution. It does not matter if the author is an Austrian citizen, or if the author works in Austria.

Researchers who hold a professorship abroad are not eligible to apply for this FWF grant.

When may an editor submit an application to the FWF?

Editors may only submit an application if the publication is an anthology. In all other cases, the author must submit the application.
