Where can I find information on funding for publications in journals or individual contributions to anthologies/collections, etc.?

Funding can be requested for publications in journals or for individual contributions to anthologies/collections, etc. as part of the Peer-reviewed Publications programme, provided that it concerns the publication of results from an FWF-funded project.

Must anthologies/collections be published open access?

According to the FWF’s Open Access policy, all peer-reviewed publications resulting from FWF-funded projects must be published open access. This applies both for entire anthologies/collections as well as for individual contributions in anthologies/collections.

  • The entire anthology/collection is considered a project result if the editor is the principal investigator or a project team member, or the anthology/collection is the result of a conference which was held as part of an FWF-funded project.
  • An individual contribution in an anthology/collection is a project result if the principal investigator or project team members publish their contributions in an anthology/collection edited by someone else.

Is the open access publication of anthologies/collections funded by the FWF?

  • Funding can be requested for the entire anthology/collection as part of the Standalone Publications programme, provided that it meets the guidelines of the programme. See https://www.fwf.ac.at/en/research-funding/fwf-programmes/stand-alone-publications/
  • The open access publication of the entire anthology/collection can be funded through the global budget if the anthology/collection is the result of an FWF-funded project. To qualify, the editor must be the principal investigator or a project team member and/or the anthology/collection is the result of a conference which was held as part of an FWF-funded project.

Is funding available for the open access publication of individual contributions in anthologies/collections?

  • The open access publication of an individual contribution in an anthology/collection can be funded through the global budget if it is published in an anthology/collection edited by someone else and meets the guidelines of the Peer-Reviewed Publications programme.

Can costs for the dissemination of project results be paid for with funds from the global budget?

Costs for the dissemination of project results can be paid for with funds from the global budget if certain requirements are met. These are as follows:

  • It must concern publications of the principal investigator and/or project staff members.
  • The dissemination costs must be related to the project.
  • The results must be published on online-platforms, etc. These must be publicly accessible and free of charge.
  • The dissemination (or its digital copy) must have a DOI or another persistent identifier and be archived in a registered repository (see Directory of Open Access Repositories or re3data).
  • The FWF must be acknowledged as the funding agency and proof must be given of this acknowledgement.
  • The products (e.g., videos, articles, etc.) resulting from the dissemination activities must be made available to the FWF without a specific request.

What is the maximum amount of costs for the dissemination of project results that can be paid for with funds from the global budget?

Costs for the dissemination of project results up to the amount of €10,000 can be paid for with funds from the global budget if the abovementioned requirements are met.

In the case of ongoing projects, if the costs for dissemination will exceed €10,000, a request must be sent in advance to the Executive Board. This request must be submitted via elane and must contain the following information on approx. one A4 page:

  • Brief description of the planned publication (form, content, dissemination format, etc.)
  • Estimated costs broken down into cost centres

This does not apply for the dissemination costs of projects in which the costs have been specified in the project proposal and have already been approved. However, the six requirements mentioned above must be met in all cases.
