I began my scientific career at an interdisciplinary research institute that could not or did not want to maintain expensive subscriptions to the various journals that interdisciplinary research would require. Therefore I appreciated colleagues who provided online publication lists that contained the full texts without the need for a subscription. Ever since then, I also keep my own publication list up to date and provide full texts whenever I am first author. These citation lists are well indexed by search engines such as Google Scholar and whenever you search my publications through Scholar, you end up at the PDFs I put online. This is a minimal service that I can offer to the scientific community and it helps to disseminate my work as well. Beyond this individual strategy, I support the Open Access initiative that offers a long-term solution so that research results are freely accessible for anyone interested.
