PhD Candidate Position in Translational Medicine (f/m)
- Biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, medicine
- Medical University of Vienna
- Closing Date
We are currently seeking a highly motivated PhD student for approximately 3 years. The position is available in the research group of Klaus Kratochwill, the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Molecular Stress Research in Peritoneal Dialysis (CDL-MSRPD), at the Department of Pediatrics of the Medical University of Vienna.
The CDL aims to provide improved therapeutic and diagnostic options for patients requiring renal replacement therapy. The objective of this project is to search for molecular mechanisms by which the cytoprotective action of novel additives is exerted in experimental and clinical peritoneal dialysis (PD) and identify the distinct molecular targets. On the basis of previously generated in-vitro and in-vivo models, the impact and controllability of post-translational modification of proteins will be investigated under stress conditions combined with cytoprotective additives. Focusing on the role of specific glycosylation of proteins, we aim to extend insight into this environmental sensor and its modulation on cellular function and ultimately patient outcome in PD.
We invite applications from outstanding graduates in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology and medicine. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of standard and advanced molecular biology technologies (including cell culture, RT-PCR, siRNA, CRISPR/Cas, integration of omics data), experimental disease models and mode-of-action research. The position requires solid analytical thinking and prior lab experience. A strong background in human biology and interest in statistical methods will be of advantage.
The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Molecular Stress Research in Peritoneal Dialysis" (CDL-MSRPD), opened in March 2016 and conducts high-level, application-oriented basic research. The infrastructure of the CDL-MSRPD laboratory is located at the interdisciplinary Anna Spiegel Center of Translational Research of the Medical University of Vienna. Candidates will benefit from an excellent set of high-tech resources, numerous educational events and interdisciplinary scientific exchange. (http://cdl-msrpd.meduniwien.ac.at/).
