Principal Investigator – Junior Group Leader Position

The Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research is a vibrant research institution at the Medical University of Vienna and is seeking a Junior Group Leader eager to pursue groundbreaking basic and translational research in the field of immunology/allergology. We are looking for an outstanding, highly motivated person with a PhD and/or MD degree and a successfully completed post-doctoral training in a relevant area of immunology who intends to establish a competitive independent research group. Applicants must provide a record of scientific excellence through high-profile publications and acquisition of competitive funding/fellowships. The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong and exciting research program, preferably with an interest in allergy research. Previous research in this field is not mandatory. The successful candidate will benefit from the attractive interdisciplinary environment and the close cooperation with various associated research teams, in particular the team of Barbara Bohle, who has a long lasting experience in allergy research as well as a strong translational focus and close cooperations with clinical departments of the General Hospital of Vienna. In addition, the candidate will be embedded in the multidisciplinary and collaborative environment of the Center for Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology, which provides many opportunities for interaction with other research groups and institutions.

The full time position is limited to 4 years with tenure-track possibility after successful evaluation. The successful candidate is expected to raise financial support from national and international third-party funds such as the FWF, EC, ERC.


As a Principal Investigator, you will

• Establish a competitive independent research group

• Develop your ambitious ideas and perform innovative medically-inspired research

• Take direct responsibility for completion of your research projects

• Participate in weekly scientific meetings and progress reports

• Actively participate and further develop our processes of selecting excellent postdoctoral fellows and PhD candidates, teaching activities and supervising postdoctoral fellows and students

• Teach at the Medical University of Vienna


Your profile

• PhD-level (or equivalent) with postdoctoral research experience and a track record of scientific excellence documented by publication and funding track records

• Enthusiastic about developing your ambitious ideas and perform innovative medically-inspired independent research that can ultimately be translated into better diagnostics and therapeutics

• Proactive team player who enjoys working across disciplines and within an international team

• Excellent management skills, high social competence and organizational skills

• Interest in allergy – but no previous research in the field required

• Collaborative and interdisciplinary mindset

• Motivation to explore and establish new methods

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Good self-organizational and presentation skills
