PhD Student in Plastic degradation project
â€â€Project background‬
†Every‬â€day,‬†we‬†are‬†surrounded‬†by‬†plastic,‬†which‬†has‬†become‬†an‬†indispensable‬†part‬†of‬†our‬†lives.‬†Each‬†year,‬
approximately‬†460‬†million‬â€metric‬â€tons‬†(Mt)‬†of‬†plastic‬†are‬†produced,‬†leading‬†to‬†significant‬†amounts‬†of‬†plastic‬
â€waste‬†(OECD,‬â€2022)‬â€.‬â€The‬†problem‬†is‬†worsened‬†by‬†the‬†fact‬†that‬†nearly‬†half‬†of‬†all‬†plastic‬†products‬†are‬†used‬
â€for‬†packaging‬†material‬†with‬†a‬†short‬†lifespan‬†of‬†6-12‬†months‬â€(Geyer,‬†Jambeck,‬†and‬†Law‬†2017)‬â€.‬â€A‬ â€solution‬†to‬
â€this‬ â€problem‬ â€is‬ â€to‬ â€use‬ â€less‬ â€plastic‬ â€products‬ â€while‬ â€simultaneously‬ â€improving‬†our‬†plastic‬†recycling‬â€abilities.‬
â€Biorecycling‬ â€is‬ â€a‬ â€promising‬ â€approach‬ â€to‬ â€achieve‬ â€sustainable‬ â€plastic‬ â€recycling‬ â€and‬ â€to‬ â€move‬ â€towards‬ â€a‬
â€circular‬†economy‬†that‬†allows‬†the‬â€re purposing‬†of‬†plastic‬†waste.‬†This‬†method‬†is‬†based‬†on‬†enzymes‬†typically‬
â€found‬ â€in‬ â€microorganisms,‬ â€such‬ â€as‬ â€bacteria‬ â€and‬ â€fungi.‬ â€Once‬ â€identified,‬â€these‬†enzymes‬†are‬†optimized‬†and‬
â€expressed to degrade plastic waste ‬â€(Hou et al. 2021)‬â€.‬
