The University of Vienna, Faculty of Chemistry, is home of the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem). DoSChem is the largest doctoral training program in Austria focusing on the field of chemistry and closely related sciences by bringing together more than 200 doctoral students and over 50 principal investigators. Our goal is to train excellent scientists and to provide an open-minded environment that allows them to connect with each other and to experience a scientifically rich environment to carry out interdisciplinary and curiosity-driven research.

Within the International Call for PhD Positions 2024 DoSChem offers 18 exciting PhD projects with various starting times covering all chemical sciences.

Your personal sphere of influence:

• #1: 1 PhD position in the group of Prof. Warth, at the Institute of Food Chemistry and Toxicology, starting June 2024 or later.

• #2: 1 PhD position in the group of Prof. Zanghellini at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, starting spring 2024 or later.

• #3: 1 PhD in the group of Prof. Backus, at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, starting any time soon.

• #4- #5: 2 PhD positions are available in the group of Prof. Bonifazi, at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, starting fall 2024: #4 1PhD position in Physical Organic Chemistry and #5 1 PhD positions in Synthetic Organic Chemistry.

• # 6: 1 PhD position in Org anometallic Chemistry/Catalysis in the group of Prof. Hultzsch, at the Institute of Functional Materials and Catalysis, starting November/December 2024 or later.

• #7: 1 PhD position in a joined project under co-supervision of Prof. Schröder at the Institute of Computational Biological Chemistry and Assoc.- Prof. Del Favero at the Institute of Food Chemistry and Toxicology starting ASASP or anytime soon.

• #8- #10: 3 PhD positions are available in the group of Prof. Rompel at the Institute of Biophysical Chemistry are available anytime starting the summer of 2024 and later: #8 1 PhD position in “Activation of a type 3 copper protein”, #9 1 PhD position in “Synthesis and characterization of a polyoxometalate“ and 1 PhD position in “Isolation and characterization of a type 3 copper protein“.

 

The contract duration of all positions is 3 years with a preliminary limitation of 1,5 years and will automatically be extended to 3 years unless the employer hands in a non-extension declaration after 12 months. An extension up to a total of 4 years is then possible provided the excellent performance of the candidate.

 

Your future tasks:

We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months and to participate in research, teaching and administration, including:

• Participation in research projects / research studies

• Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations

• Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement

• Supervision of students

• Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums

• Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration

If you have completed master’s degree (or an equivalent) in:

• Chemistry

• Chemical or Materials Engineering

• Computational Science

• Physics

• Biochemistry

• Biology/Molecular Biology

• Food Chemistry/ Nutritional Sciences

• Pharmacology/Pharmaceutical Sciences

 

Expectations for successful candidates

The language of the school is English; therefore, English is required, German is an advantage. Further expectations are:

• Strong communication, data presentation and visualization skills

• Ability to work both, independently and collaboratively

• Involvement in the institute’s and research administration and teaching activities
