Master Student

Division Pharmacology

Head: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dagmar Stoiber-Sakaguchi

Minor employment, 1 year position

The Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL) is part of an academic and research community located at the Campus Krems, and includes a network of teaching hospitals in St. Pölten, Krems, Tulln and Eggenburg. The university offers degree programs in Human Medicine and Psychology which are tailored to the requirements of the Bologna model, opening the door to new, cutting-edge health professions. KL is committed to raising its profile in specific areas of biomedicine, biomedical engineering, and biopsychosocial sciences by entering into strategic academic and research partnerships with other institutions.

Information on the research project:

Aberrant activation of the Janus Kinase (JAK) / Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) pathway is commonly observed in various malignancies. Our research group investigates the role of STAT3 in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. Notably, most patients with AML exhibit constitutive activation of STAT3, which is linked to adverse prognosis. However, current pharmacological approaches targeting JAK/STAT signaling have shown modest effectiveness. This project aims to evaluate the efficacy of different pharmacological strategies targeting JAK/STAT signaling (STAT3 degraders/inhibitors, JAK inhibitors,…).

The student will be primarily responsible for generating and maintaining primary leukemia cells as well as established cell lines. Additional tasks include conducting in vitro drug testing using various assays, performing molecular biology techniques (such as RT-qPCR and Western blotting), analyzing data, and assisting with routine laboratory duties.

Methods:

Molecular biology, cell culture, flow cytometry, histology
