The Future of Mountain Forests: Responses to a Drier Climate

Gebirgsregionen spielen eine zentrale Rolle in globalen geo-chemischen Kreisläufen, sie weisen eine außerordentliche Biodiversität auf und erfüllen vielfältige ökologische und sozio-ökonomische Funktionen. Der Klimawandel, der in alpinen Bereichen besonders ausgeprägt ist, wird sich auch auf Bergwälder auswirken, da rasche Anpassungen aufgrund der langen Generationszyklen von Bäumen nicht möglich sind. Trockenheit könnte deshalb die Vitalität, Produktivität und insbesondere die Schutzfunktion von Bergwäldern reduzieren und zu Kombinationseffekten, etwa durch das erhöhte Risiko von Waldbränden, führen. In diesem Projekt wird untersucht, ob und wie Trockenheit den Kohlenstoff- und Wasserhaushalt von Bäumen und Wäldern, die pflanzlichen Stressantworten und Interaktionen mit Mikroorganismen sowie die Ökosystemleistungen beeinflusst. Acht, miteinander verknüpften Doktoratsprojekte beschäftigen sich mit (i) dem Kohlenstoffhaushalt von Bäumen, (ii) pflanzlichen Stressantworten, (iii) der Phloem-Physiologie von Bäumen, (iv) Interaktionen von Mikroorgansimen und Pflanzen, (iv) Waldbränden, (v) dem Kohlenstoffkreislauf von Wäldern, (vi) flüchtigen organischen Stoffen und (vii) den Ökosystemleistungen von Wäldern. Die Doktoratsprojekte sind in das Innsbruck Doctoral College Alpine Biology and Global Change, einem von vier Dokotoratskollegs des Forschungsschwerpunktes Alpiner Raum der Universität Innsbruck, eingebettet. Das Leitungsteam desProjektes besteht aus acht etablierten WissenschaftlerInnen der BereichePflanzenbiologie, Mikrobiologie,Ökologie und Atmosphärenwissenschaften. Die DoktorandInnen werden in Teams betreut und profitieren von interdisziplinärem Austausch mit anderen Doktoratsstudierenden, der engen Zusammenarbeit mit anerkannteninternationalen wissenschaftlichenPartnerInnen, der Verfügbarkeit bestens ausgestatteter Feldstationen und einem umfassenden Ausbildungsprogramm. Sie sind auch in die Durchführung der International Mountain Conference und die zugehörige Summer School eingebunden. Das Projekt wird das Verständnis von Bergwäldern und der komplexen Prozesse unter aktuellen und zukünftigen Bedingungen verbessern und relevantes Wissen für das zukünftige Management von Bergwäldern kreieren. Es wird zur Etablierung eines Schwerpunktes und eines Forschungsteams zum Themenbereich Bergwald an der Universität Innsbruck führen, einen weiteren Ausbau von Infrastruktur, Methoden und Ausstattung der Feldstationen ermöglichen, neue Projekte sowie nationale und internationale Kooperationen initiieren und die Weiterentwicklung der Struktur, Organisation und des Ausbildungsprogramms der Innsbruck Doctoral Colleges fördern.
