Funding goals
International Principal Investigator Projects are intended to fund closely integrated projects in which researchers in Austria and Japan make substantial scientific contributions, creating added value through international cooperation.
Funding period and funding amount
- FWF: up to 36 months
- JSPS: up to 24 months
Requirements
For international Principal Investigator Projects with Japan, the application requirements of the FWF programs Principal Investigator Projects or Clinical Research apply to FWF applicants.
Approval
- Applications are reviewed independently by FWF and JSPS.
- International Principal Investigator Projects are approved only if both organizations recommend funding the respective application based on the review process.
Information on the current call
The call covers all areas of basic research, including clinical research. The application, review, and funding process of the individual project components are administered separately by the FWF and the JSPS, pursuant to their respective national regulations.
Applications to the FWF: June 3, 2026 to August 21, 2026 (2:00 pm Vienna local time)
Applications to the JSPS: Early June 2026 to September 3, 2026. The exact deadlines will be published by JSPS.
Application information
- Proposals are submitted online using the electronic application portal elane.
- Parallel applications for the respective parts of each project are submitted separately; the national rules of the FWF and the JSPS apply.
- Applications must be submitted by the national deadlines.
