A novel Hybrid Dysgenesis System in Drosophila melanogaster

We have a thesis position for a groundbreaking project, investigating hybrid dysgenesis caused by the transposable element Transib1. If true, this is the first novel hybrid dysgenesis system discovered in over 40 years, offering a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of genetic research.
Project Overview:
The successful candidate will explore the fascinating world genetics and genomics of selfish DNA in Drosophila. Hybrid dysgenesis is a phenomenon where crosses between certain strains of fruit flies result in sterility and other genetic abnormalities whereas reciprocal crosses are healthy. Understanding this process has far-reaching implications for genetics and evolution.
Research Techniques:
You will gain hands-on experience with a variety of advanced techniques, including:
- Drosophila handling and breeding: Master the art of maintaining and crossing fruit flies
- DNA and RNA extractions: Learn and perfect the methods for isolating nucleic acids from fly tissues, a critical step in molecular analyses.
- Next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis: Participate in cutting-edge sequencing data analysis to explore the genomic, transcriptomic and epigenetic (piRNAs) landscapes associated with hybrid dysgenesis.
