Abstract Final report

The purpose of this research is the critical edition of De Glorificatione Trinitatis et Processione Spiritus Sancti (1127-8) of Rupert of Deutz (1075-1129). De Glorificatione represents Rupert`s most elaborate work, in which he dedicates himself most freely to thematic questions in his highest compactness of thoughts. The work constitutes an important step within the evolution of theological treatises. Rupert, who is known as an exegete, liturgist, historian, dogmatist, hymnist, visionary, is considered as the "father of German symbolism" and at the same time as the most influential thinker in the German speaking area of the 12th century. The influence on art exerted by this theologian is probably unique. He is thought to be an innovator in many fields, e.g. because of his more positive view of people and women and because he also paved the way for the development of modern sciences and arts. As a visionary and mystic theologian he also exercised an enormous influence on mysticism. His works were mainly adopted and studied in the 12th an 13th centuries, at the time of Reformation and continually increasingly since the end of the 19th century. The treatise De Glorificatione on the one hand represents the critical discussion with the Jewish idea of God, especially with the Jewish interpretation of the Old Testament, and on the other hand a dialogue with the orthodox churches when dealing with the question concerning filioque. Also because of the inexhaustible typological exegesis of discovering in the Old Testament an abundance of images and symbols of the Trinity, this work - which is his most elaborate - can be considered as the result of a whole life of contemplating the bible. Especially now, at a time of religious dialogues Rupert`s honest struggle for a dialogue between the Jewish idea of God and the Christian orthodox churches requires and deserves examination and appre-ciation. This research, however, requires a more precise appreciation of the opus, which presupposes a secured text as a basis. The theology of history and the doctrine of Trinity are important for theological research. The introduction to the edition gives an explanation to the method and the criteria - in front a detailed description to the manuscripts and their bibliography followed by its stemma. The introduction will propose the research results concerning genesis, time and context, reason, address, intention, structure and concept of the work, and a concise summary of contents. The critical edition (8 manuscripts) will present a list of references and sources. Director of the project is Prof. DDr. Gerhard Leibold. Other persons involved in the project are Doz. Dr. Hans Kraml, MA MTh Bruno Niederbacher and Dipl. theol. Rainer Klotz.
