These are the acts of a conference on "The present state and the future of the rising generation of university
teachers", organized by the editors on behalf of the Austrian Club of the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation (the
leading German institution fort he promotion of young scholars) in autumn 2000. Its point of departure is the
safeguarding of the quality of the rising generation of scholars and scientists and thus of the continuing quality of
the Austrian university system in international comparison. The political, economical and social requirements
facing the universities, however contradictory among themselves, have one thing in common: they are topical and
focus on the present time, instead of allowing the "long breath" for a far-sighted personnel policy. This volume
inventorizes the present situation, focusing on Austria, and subdivided according to disciplines and types of
universities. Desirable measures are recommended with respect to existing social and legal conditions.
