Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship J 1894 The teleiopoietic structure of freindship (Derrida) Arno BÖHLER 06.03.2000 The applicant wants to analyze in his research project (with Prof. Avital RONELL, New York University) the teleiopoietic structure of friendship. In Derrida`s concept of friendship teleiopoietic means the temporal structure of a paradoxical sentence which tries to anticipate facts - but without forgetting the fact that - ...things might be-come different in relation to our expectations. Nietzsche calls this knowledge of knowing, "how soon things can be-come different", the experience of the "Dangerous Perhaps". An uncanny experience in relation to which the metaphysicians of all ages seem to be allergic. It even seems necessary to say that the idiosyncrasy of the metaphysicians against the contingent status of their fundamental judgements is a kind of archaic repression and displacement against the mortality of human knowledge. The paradoxical "dogma" of such a knowledge of "knowing the limits of one`s own knowledge in relation to what will be and be-come possible in future" can be formulated in the following way: "Alas! If only you knew, how soon, how very soon, things can be-come different!" (Nietzsche) - How can this paradoxical knowledge of knowing, "that things will be different - perhaps", systematically be understood in a philosophical way? - Why is the knowledge about the mortality of our knowledge in relation to what is going to come absolutely important and necessary for a democratic culture of friendship? - How should we think the concept of friendship, if friendship is the proper place where the possibility of a sudden alteration of being is permanent inscribed in the relation to the other (the boy-friend, the girl-friend)? In trying to find answers on this questions, the analysis will have found out, perhaps, that the teleiopoietic structure of friendship is only possible in and through the virtual dimension of our existence. The temporal analysis of "virtuality" as the transcendental foundation of the "postmodern" concept of friendship is therefore the ultimate aim of this research project.
