"The Gaspar van Weerbeke Edition" is conceived as part of the complete music edition of one of the great composers in the second half of the 15th century. The entire edition has been planned for many years and should consist of five volumes when completed. However only a single volume has been realized so far. It is the aim of the current project to prepare two further volumes containing all motets, the magnificat, the lamentation, and the whole secular work in a modern score. Since only a small part of the repertory has so far been available in critical editions, a reliable analytical approach to this music has been impossible. That will change once the Gaspar van Weerbeke Edition is available. This is of particular importance because the music of Gaspar is connected with the Milanes style - Weerbeke`s place of activity for a long term -, a style that is of quite general interest for the music history of this time. The relevance of studying this style, which has been increased by recent results in Josquin research, will become even more apparent from the two Weerbeke volumes to be published. The American Institute of Musicology has agreed to publish these two volumes on its own costs in the renowned series CORPUS MENSURABILIS MUSICAE (CMM) alongside the already existing first volume of the edition. International distribution of the editorial work is thereby guaranteed.
