Master’s Thesis Position in Molecular Biology / Biotechnology
Institution: BOKU University
Department: Department of Agricultural Sciences
Institute: Institute of Microbial Genetics (IMiG)
Lab: Fungal Bioactive Metabolites and Systems Biology Group
Location: Campus Tulln, Austria
A Master’s thesis position is available in the Fungal Bioactive Metabolites and Systems Biology Group at BOKU University (Campus Tulln). The thesis will be embedded in an ongoing research project investigating molecular and biological roles of Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenases (LPMOs) in mycoparasitic, plant-associated fungi.
LPMOs are emerging as multifunctional proteins with potential roles beyond polysaccharide degradation, including involvement in microbial interactions.
Thesis focus
* Heterologous expression of selected LPMOs in fungal and/or bacterial expression systems
* Protein purification and biochemical characterization of LPMOs
* Fungal–fungal and fungal–plant interaction assays, focusing on antagonistic behavior and colonization-related traits in mycoparasitic fungi
* Interpretation of experimental results in the context of LPMO-related fungal interaction biology
The exact scope of the project will be adapted to the student’s background and the duration of the thesis.
Candidate profile
* Enrollment in a Master’s program in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or a related field
* Strong interest in fungal biology, enzyme function, and microbial interactions
* Basic experience in molecular biology techniques (e.g. cloning, PCR, etc.)
* Good English communication skills and motivation to work independently
We offer
* A well-defined Master’s thesis project embedded in an active research environment
* Training in molecular biology, protein expression, purification, and fungal interaction assays
* Close supervision within an international research team
* Access to modern laboratory infrastructure at the BOKU Campus Tulln
* Small financial support to assist with commuting costs during the thesis
