Abstract
In recent research, the Vandals and their 5 th and 6 th century North African kingdom have received comparatively
little attention. The Workshop "The Vandal Regnum and its (pre-)histories", held from 14th to 15th January 2005 at
Vienna was intended to fill gaps and deal with neglected aspects of Vandal history. In this volume the proceedings
of the workshop will be pusblished. The central problem addressed was the question of Vandal identity and the not
very well understood relations to European prehistory. Who were the Vandals, how did they become what they
were, and which role did their kingdom play in this process?
The organizing institutions were the "Institut für Mittelalterforschung at the Österreichische Akademie der
Wissenschaften", Vienna and the "Institut zur interdisziplinären Erforschung des Mittelalters und seines
Nachwirkens (IEMAN)", Paderborn. Twenty scholars, historians and archaelogists, from Austria Germany, Great
Britian, France, Spain, Hungary, Tunisia and the US participate in the volume.
